Workshops

We identified individuals who oppose FGM in the community as well as globally and promoted them as role models. Our potential role models many times include families, teachers, religious figures and others who have abandoned the practice, advised others against it, or made public statements in opposition to it. We document the stories of how these individuals reached their decisions and how they dealt with the confusion, opposition and taking a stand against the majority.

During the workshop we create a forum where these individuals testify about their experiences. This approach is very effective in communities where FGM is widely practiced because of stigma. In Tigania, so many girls perform the practice on themselves and they end up dying. At the end of the workshop, we provide an opportunity for these young women to embrace their studies. This eliminates early marriages caused by poverty. We work with local schools to select top performing young girls and after they complete the workshop, we pay for their school fees until the complete high school.
